Gulbuddin Hekmatyar

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, born on August 1, 1947, in Imam Sahib, Afghanistan, is an Afghan politician and the leader of Hezb-i-Islami. He was one of the most prominent mujahideen commanders during the Soviet-Afghan War and served as Prime Minister of Afghanistan twice (1993–1994, 1996). Known as the 'Butcher of Kabul' for his role in the civil war shelling of the capital, Hekmatyar has a controversial legacy. After years as a fugitive, he returned to Kabul in 2017 following a peace deal with the Afghan government. He ran in the 2019 presidential election. His political career spans over four decades and he remains an influential figure in Afghan politics.
