Biography
Khedive Ismail (1830-1895) was the Khedive of Egypt from 1863 to 1879. He is known for modernizing Egypt, including the construction of the Suez Canal, the founding of the city of Ismailia, and the expansion of Cairo. His ambitious modernization programs, including the reconstruction of Cairo in a European style, transformed Egypt but also led to significant debt.
