Martin Wickramasinghe

Martin Wickramasinghe (May 29, 1890 – July 2, 1976) is considered the father of modern Sinhala literature. Born in Koggala, Galle, he is the most widely read author in Sri Lanka and his works have been translated into over 30 languages. His major works include 'Gamperaliya' (Tillage), 'Kaliyugaya' (The Age of Kali), and 'Viragaya' (Asceticism), which are considered classics of Sri Lankan literature. These novels depict the social transformation of Sri Lankan village life during the colonial period. Wickramasinghe also wrote extensively on folklore, anthropology, and film theory. The Martin Wickramasinghe Museum in Koggala is dedicated to preserving his literary legacy. His influence on Sri Lankan literature and culture is immeasurable, and he is celebrated as one of the greatest writers in South Asian literary history.
