Biography
Shirani Bandaranayake, born on April 20, 1958, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is a former Chief Justice of Sri Lanka who served from 2011 to 2013. She was the first female Chief Justice in Sri Lanka's history. Her tenure was marked by a dramatic constitutional crisis when President Mahinda Rajapaksa attempted to impeach her in 2013, leading to widespread protests and international criticism. Despite being impeached, she continued to claim legitimacy as Chief Justice until she retired. She later became a senator and has been a prominent advocate for judicial independence and rule of law in Sri Lanka. Her stand against political interference in the judiciary made her a symbol of judicial independence in South Asia.
